How We Work

Students for Education Reform Minnesota (SFER MN) is the only organization in our state dedicated to building a movement of students and families for educational justice.

HOW We Fight

Here are just a few of the tactics we've used:

  • DIRECT ACTIONS
  • PUBLIC AWARENESS
  • TESTIFYING
  • DOOR KNOCKING
  • ADVOCACY
  • LEGAL CHALLENGES
  • ELECTED OFFICIAL SCORECARDS
  • PETITIONS
  • SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGNS
  • COMMUNITY FORUMS
  • RESEARCH ON ISSUES & SOLUTIONS

WHY We Fight

Students of color and from low-income families are being robbed of their rights to an equal education in Minnesota. Our state offers a better quality education to white children than to children of color and to students from higher vs. lower income families.

As a result of these educational disparities, white and more affluent children are more likely to get a degree and a living wage job that can build family wealth, stay out of the criminal justice system, and have more life choices than children of color and children in poverty. It’s unjust and unacceptable.

Our supposedly "progressive" political leaders know this is true – yet they allow this injustice to continue. At SFERMN, we use our collective power to change the system to get our kids the education they deserve. As students and families directly affected by this injustice, we're in the best position to propose solutions. Raising our voices together, we won't be ignored.

WHERE We Fight

On Campus

Through SFER, students fight for educational justice on issues that affect them, their siblings, and their community. They organize campus chapters, choose issues to take on, design and run campaigns, and gain leadership skills, while connecting with fellow student activists from across the country.

> Spotlight: OUR MEMBERS

At the Capitol

Together, SFER members advocate for policies that make education equal and just. Our kids don’t have lobbyists: they need us to stand up for them. SFER members show up at the Capitol, hold legislators accountable, and introduce laws that benefit our children’s education. We make sure policymakers are representing the best interests of our kids and our communities.

In the Community

Through SFER, families fight for the education their kids deserve. They identify issues they’re facing and force the system to improve. SFER families take on local, state, and national issues. They usually connect through neighborhood chapters while building a powerful statewide parent movement.

In the Courts

When elected officials and the education system won’t do the right thing, we need to step up the fight. Our children have a right to an equal education and, if needed, we will use litigation to challenge those who stand in the way of those rights. Sadly, it's not enough to have just laws and policies in place - we have to monitor them to make sure they're followed.
